Chemistry 112

Friday, Nov. 27th

I had to spend some more time on moles, mass and molar mass problems today.

Here is a tutorial I’ve posted on YouTube:

It’s also a good preview of some concentration questions that are coming up!

Thursday, Nov. 19th

Today we went over the reactions from the lab and balanced them.  Then I gave you a writing and balancing assign that I want handed in tomorrow.

Wednesday, Nov. 18th

Well, I went over a number of balancing examples with you, and then went on quite a long rant about the need for time mangament skills and how you could improve your productivity and be prepared for univeristy.  Eventually I regained my focus and then asked you to revisit the lab that was done with forming compounds, and got you to actually write the chemical reactions that occured when each set of chemicals were mixed together.

Tuesday, Nov. 17th

Today I went over ChemQuest 29 Balancing Equations.  I then gave you back your pretest, and had you add more to it.  Finally I gave you a balancing reactions worksheet.

Monday, Nov. 9th

We are now looking at reactions, and today we started an inquiry based activity where you have been working in groups to do a worksheet on Chemical Reactions ChemQuest.  We will go over up to question #8 tomorrow, and will give you more time to get this done on your own.

Monday, Oct. 26th

Today I gave you a naming assign that is due for Tuesday.

Thursday, Oct. 22nd

Today we went over the first few parts of both questions on the Naming Ionic Compounds worksheet.  Then I told you to complete the rest of the sheet.

Tuesday, Oct. 20th

Today was our second big test.  After the test I asked you to start into chapter 9 and do pg. 258 #7, 8, and 9.

Monday, Oct. 19th

You have a test tomorrow that covers the topics we’ve been reviewing for the past few classes.  Happy studying!

Friday, Oct. 16th

We went over the first section of questions from the review questions below.  Finsih the rest up over the weekend, and we’ll go over them on monday. Remember that the universities will be here on monday morning, so we’ll only have half of the class for review.  The test will be on Tuesday.

Thursday, Oct. 15th

For the past few days we have done work on valence electrons and I gave this valence electrons worksheet.  I also assigned pg. 193 #1 – 11.  (you may find answers in section 7.1 of the text.)

Finally it is time to start reviewing for the next test.  I assigned the following questions for next week’s test:

Sections 4.1, 4.2, 4.3

pg. 122 #34, 35, 39, 40, 41, 44, 46, 47, 49, 50, 52, 54, 65

Sections 5.1, 5.2

pg. 149 #22, 26, 27, 30, 32, 34

Section 6.3

pg. 181 #36, 37, 38, 39, 43

Section 7.1

pg. 207 #30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 36, 37

Friday, Oct. 2nd

Today we learned how to determine the electron configuration for an atom by applying the Afbau Principle, the Pauli-Exclusion principle, and Hund’s Rule.   I gave you the following electron configuration handout which should help.  I assigned pg. 135 #8 and 9 as practice.  On monday I will be giving you this  electron configuration worksheet to do after the QUIZ on isotopes and ions.  If you forgot your sheets at home the practice we did for these was: atoms and ions worksheet and isotope worksheet.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, Oct. 1st

In the past week, you’ve been working on atoms and isotopes, writing a retest, and reading about atomic theory.  Today I delved into the nebulous world of quantum mechanics, and we all came out unscathed.  I asked you to try questions #1-4 on page 132.

Thursday, Sept. 24th

Today I went over some examples of the ions worksheet, and left you some time to do the rest of the sheet.  I also assigned pg. 108 #8 – 14.

Wednesday, Sept. 23rd

Today was an attempt to clear up a lot of material from the last few days.  We weren’t very successful at that, but, trust me, day 2 of the battle will show alot more understanding of atoms, ions, isotopes, and the like.

A previous student just emailed me the link to this video:

Friday, Sept. 18th

Today was the last day of review before the test on Monday.  Have a great weekend studying!  Don’t hate me too much!

This post is the reason I block comments on my blog! :)

Thursday, Sept. 17th

Today I assigned a HUGE pile of questions for review for Monday’s Test.  They are:  Pg. 58 – 59 #35, 39, 41, 42, 44, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 52, 54, 55, 56, 60 – 64, 67,  AND Pg. 181 #26 – 29, 30, 33.  We already went over the first 7 or 8 questions.  We’ll try to tackle the rest of them by the end of tomorrow’s class.

I haven’t forgotten about the reaction videos:

Here is someone’s opinion of the top 8 reactions:

#8 Sodium and water in chlorine gas:

#7 Potassium Chlorate and Gummy Bear Reaction

#6 Meissner Effect

#5  Sodium Acetate Super Saturation

#4 Floating on Sulfur Hexafluoride

AND

#3  Super fluid Helium

#2  Thermite and Liquid Nitrogen

#1  Briggs-Rauscher Reaction

Wednesday, Sept. 16th

Today we finished up the periodic table notes, and we will start reviewing for the upcoming test.

Tuesday, Sept. 15th

Today I went over the theory questions, assigned a few more for you, and we started into the periodic table notes.  I also showed you a video very similar to this:

Monday, Sept. 14th

Today we went over the questions from last day and did some more notes on elements and compounds as well as chemical reactions.  I then assigned you to try all of the questions from pg. 54 of the text.

I anticipate having a test at the end of the week.

Friday, Sept. 11th

Today we discussed some characteristics of mixtures, and the difference between elements and compounds.  I gave you a Flow Chart for Classifying Matter, and I also asked you to do questions 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17 on pg. 47.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, Sept. 10th

First we went over yesterday’s homework, then I discussed the properties of matter as well as states of matter and phase changes.  The fire drill then prevented me from assigning any homework to you.  You won’t always be so lucky!!!!!

Wednesday, Sept. 9th

Today I gave you the course outline, a discussion on MANNERS and a handout on unit 1 projects.  We then did general discussions on chemistry and I asked you to read section 1.1 and answer questions #1-4 on page 11.
